How to Measure Wheel Bolt Pattern
Learning how to measure wheel bolt pattern requires two numbers: the number of lug holes and the exact pitch circle diameter (PCD) they form (such as 5 × 4.5" or 5 × 114.3 mm). Use our calculator and diagram below to measure any 4, 5, 6, or 8 lug rim accurately.

Select your lug count and enter your center-to-center measurement:
5 Lugs: Measure center-to-center skipping one stud across the wheel (C × 1.0515), or switch method above.4, 6 or 8 Lugs (Exact): Measure straight across from the center of one hole directly to the center of the opposite hole.
Fitment note: Also check your vehicle’s Center Bore and Offset (ET).
Popular Wheel Bolt Patterns (Inches ↔ MM)
Both columns show the exact same bolt circle diameter in US inches and metric millimeters.
| Inches (US) | Millimeters (mm) | Lugs | Common Vehicles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 3.94" | 4 × 100 mm | 4 | Honda Civic (through 2005), Mazda Miata, Mini Cooper, Toyota Corolla (through 2002) |
| 5 × 4.50" ★ | 5 × 114.3 mm | 5 | Ford Mustang, Toyota Camry & RAV4, Honda Accord & CR-V, Jeep Wrangler (YJ/TJ) |
| 5 × 4.75" | 5 × 120.65 mm | 5 | Classic Chevy Camaro, Corvette, Chevy S-10, Pontiac Firebird |
| 5 × 5.00" | 5 × 127 mm | 5 | Jeep Wrangler (JK/JL), Grand Cherokee (1999+), Chevy C10 Trucks |
| 6 × 5.50" ★ | 6 × 139.7 mm | 6 | Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Toyota Tacoma & 4Runner |
| 8 × 6.50" | 8 × 165.1 mm | 8 | Chevy/GMC 2500HD & 3500HD, Dodge Ram 2500, Ford F-250 (through 1997) |
Always confirm your exact vehicle year and trim before ordering wheels.
3 Common Mistakes to Avoid
Measuring Across on a 5-Lug Wheel
On a 5-lug wheel, no two holes sit directly opposite each other. Measure center-to-center between two neighboring holes and multiply by 1.7013 (÷ sin 36°).
Mixing Up 5×114.3 and 5×120
They look nearly identical by eye (less than 6 mm apart), but forcing the wrong pattern onto your hub will cross-thread or snap your wheel studs.
Overlooking Center Bore & Offset
Even when the bolt pattern matches, the wheel’s center hole (bore) must fit over your axle hub and the offset (ET) must clear your brakes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure a wheel bolt pattern?
A bolt pattern has two numbers: the lug count and the circle diameter that passes through the lug hole centers, such as 5x114.3 mm (5x4.5 inches). Count the lugs first, then measure the circle with the method for your lug count.
How do I measure a 5-lug bolt pattern?
Five lugs have no opposite pair, so use the center-to-edge method shown above. You can also measure center to center between two neighboring lug holes and multiply by 1.7013 to get the pattern diameter.
How do I measure a 4-lug, 6-lug or 8-lug bolt pattern?
Measure from the center of one lug hole straight across to the center of the opposite lug hole. That distance is the bolt pattern diameter.
How do I measure a trailer wheel bolt pattern?
Use the same methods as for car wheels. Common trailer patterns include 5x4.5 inches, 5x5 inches, 6x5.5 inches and 8x6.5 inches.
Is 5x4.5 the same as 5x114.3?
Yes. 4.5 inches multiplied by 25.4 equals 114.3 mm. In the same way, 4x100 means 4 lugs on a 100 mm circle.
Does the bolt pattern alone tell me if a wheel will fit?
No. Also check center bore, offset, lug seat type and thread size before buying wheels.
